Enkutatash Festival

Ethiopian coffee ceremony served with traditional baked bread, popcorn and coffee

One of the most prominent holidays in Ethiopia is called Enkutatash and it’s the first day of the New Year in Ethiopia and Eritrea. The main purpose of this holiday is to bring together families, friends, and neighbors through the act of preparing and sharing various types of foods and gifts. This holiday is usually ongoing for at least a couple of days. During the eve of Enkutatash most people tend to first attend church services and prayers to usher into the New Year(Chiazor et al. 2016). However, the second day is filled with people getting together to celebrate by singing and dancing. Many houses are decorated with freshly cut green grass and yellow flowers spread across to the floor, which creates a positive and vibrant atmosphere.
